Godiva: birthday cake and caramel pear

I'm slowly working my way through a generous assortment of Godiva chocolates from Valentine's Day. Up first: birthday cake (top) and caramel pear (bottom)!

I loved the color of the birthday cake truffle and the sprinkles were a cute touch. The entire effect sort of reminded me of champagne. How appropriate for a party! I accidentally brushed about half the sprinkles off when I was taking it out of the box, though... bummer.

The inside was your typical Godiva ganache. Smooth and creamy, with a touch of graininess. The birthday cake flavor really came through. The sprinkles gave it a nice crunch, and there were even a couple multicolored bits in the ganache a la rainbow chip cake!  It seemed like there was a slight hint of fruit as well - maybe strawberry? This one was a little saccharine for my taste.

The pear caramel was pretty good too, but to be honest it tasted a lot more like banana to me. There aren't any banana truffles in my box so I have no idea what's up with that. Anyway, the truffle itself was pretty, with a nice clear horse-and-lady-Godiva design. The shell was thicker than I expected and resisted when I tried to bite through it. Then it suddenly gave with a snap and half of the shell broke apart into smaller pieces. The inside was good, if banana-y, and was lighter and more whipped-up than the standard truffle fillings. I thought the dark chocolate was a good complement to the filling but I wonder if milk chocolate would have been less brittle and therefore less messy?

That's it for today, but the next few posts will chronicle my journey through the rest of the box!
